New Treatment Options for Multiple Sclerosis

For those suffering from Multiple Sclerosis, more and more options for treatment keep getting introduced to the medical profession. The National M.S. Society magazine, Momentum, included a feature story in its Spring 2011 issue titled "A New Era: New Drugs, New Options, New Risk" that I would encourage anyone suffering from MS or who has a family member of friend with MS to read.

Fingolimod approved as first oral medication to treat Multiple Sclerosis ("MS") relapses

On September 21, 2010, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration ("FDA") approved Fingolimod capsules (Gilenya, Novartis International AG) for reducing the frequency of relapses and delaying the accumulation of disabling symptoms in relapsing forms of Multiple Sclerosis ("MS"). This is the first oral disease-modifying therapy for the treatment of MS. According to Novartis, the drug will be available for prescription in the coming weeks.

Mid-Florida Chapter of the Multiple Sclerosis Society Launches New Website

The Mid-Florida Chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society has launched its new website. Multiple Sclerosis - MS - is a complex neurological disease with a wide variety of symptoms that can appear rapidly but often improve or get worse without obvious cause over weeks or months. MS frequently leads to disability.

MS symptoms are different for every person who suffers from the disease. They vary in intensity and problem based on where the nerves are damaged. These symptoms may or may not be transient. The following is a list of some of the many symptoms of MS:

• Numbness or tingling in the limbs
• Impaired balance
• Change in vision such as blurred vision in one eye or double vision
• Fatigue that does not seem associated with activity
• Change in bowel, bladder, and sexual function
• Stiffness or tightness in the muscles
• Weakness
• Trouble walking

Multiple Sclerosis Patients With Relapsing-Remitting MS May Get Relief From New Drug

The National MS Society is reporting a study on its research page that may of interest to those with Relapsing-Remitting Multiple Sclerosis. The study, titled Oral FTY720 (Fingolimod) Reduced Relapse Rate More Effectively Than Avonex in Initial Results of One-Year Study on relpasing-remitting Multiple Sclerosis, addresses the impact of an experimental drug called FTY720 on relapsing-remitting Multiple Sclerosis. The drug is a Novartis product which is also referred to by its tradename, Fingolimod. It is still in clinical trials. Novartis hopes to begin the FDA approval process for Fingolimod in 2009 according to the article.

With any luck, this new medication may reduce the impact of MS on people with relapsing-remitting MS, as well as reduce the incidence of disability due to MS.
